I think any good teacher, in any line of education, would tell you teaching is in itself a learning experience. For me, what works technically and from a curriculum stand point,

what brings forth both immediate and long term results, has become more apparent throughout my time and experience as an instructor. My understanding of what connects and resonates with students has developed and increased over the years as well.

By remaining open to new ideas or rethinking one's own, educators can and should continuously evolve.

A great degree of what I believe and espouse has been integrated

into my teaching for decades, stemming from my time participating in and teaching

drum lines. Much of that was derived from the concepts and methods of Tom Float,

a pioneer in the field. While the well defined approach to hand, stick and drum found in marching percussion helped me obtain precise and consistent results for myself and from my students, when it came to time keeping and groove, it seemed there were still some stones left unturned. This lead me to think more about what role the mind can play in our development. One big question I had was why some players, even those with innate talent and advanced ability, have certain rhythmical and timing skills elude them?

Why is this the case? The biggest culprit I have discovered, is not connecting to what I refer to as our inner musician - our musical mind and soul.

Great time keeping, feel, understanding of rhythm and the interpretation thereof, come from an internal place. I believe they have as much to do with quality playing as our hands and feet. That's not exactly revolutionary thinking, but I feel I have tapped into ways to access results mentally. Methods to unlock the inner drummer and timekeeper.

I aim to marry the mathematical and technical sides of drumming with a more natural, organic approach from within. To find ways to build this connection that are very tangible and achievable. Combine this with strong fundamentals developed through logical exercises and thorough practice routines, the road to improvement is paved smoothly and securely. We are poised to progress and make the most of our talent.
